Stourhead Gardens

A good day out

A good day out

103 107This is a great time of year to visit gardens and admire their autumn finery before the winter sets in. It is surprising the colour from the trees and the late flowers that are still there to be admired. Yesterday we visited Stourhead Gardens in Wiltshire. A national trust garden and house open to the public.

The garden is centred around a large lake which has extensive mature  tree and shrub plantings. Placed around the lake are temples and grottos to the gods of Greece and antiquity.

The best time to see the garden is now or in the spring when the Rhododendrons and Azaleas are flowering.

Despite being lords of thousands of acres ,the Hoar family which owned the Bodnant estate  came to an end when their only son was killed in the first war . After which the estate was bequeathed to the National Trust. The pain when that telegram arrived with the news of his death must have been almost unbearable.
