Pin Oak (Quercus palustris)

October 24th, 2014

One of the best free standing trees that we have at Averys Garden Centre is the  Pin Oak (Quercus palustris) Where as the Gingko (Maidenhair tree) come from China the Pin Oak arrive in Britain from America and Canada in about 1800.Have you noticed that autumn colour for most of our native trees is predominantly yellow but across the Atlantic in North America it tends to be red.

In most years the foliage on the Pin Oak  turns a brilliant scarlet red, but this year it has been a bit disappointing in its coloration and has not seen the season out in its normal fiery red display. Many years ago when my old dad passed away it was the tree that I choose to plant at Cannington Horticultural Collage in his memory .I think he would have approved.
