Spindle tree (Euonymus europeaus)

August 28th, 2014

This year autumn seems to be coming earlier, with a lot of trees and bushes already changing colour, coupled with bumper crops of fruits and berries. One of the best native shrubs for autumn colour is the Spindle tree (Euonymus europeas) so called because its wood was used to make spindles for spinning. Its a fast growing shrub, tolerant of a wide range of conditions which turns into wonderful rich  autumn colours and at the same time becomes  covered in unusual pink fruits.  Unfortunately the fruits are poisonous  if eaten even though the birds love them and suffer no harm.
