Rhododendron in bloom

May 12th, 2014

What the Victorian plant hunters, from Britain must have thought, as they toiled around the slopes of the Himalayas and came across the exotic flowers in all their flamboyance of the Rhododendron plants.

It’s because of these intrepid explorers, who sent back seeds and plants of their finds to Kew gardens and rich gentlemen backers that we can today wonder at these  exotic plants in are own gardens.

When you next look at a Rhododendron flower, think of it’s ancestors, being transported, first by pack mule from down the mountainside, onto a dhow to sail down the river Ganges,  then to be transported onto Britain in a steam boat, and then on to Kew Gardens by horse.

And some people think that gardening’s boring.
