Pretty Pansy faces

September 8th, 2015

One of plants that plant breeders have greatly improved on over the past years are ,Pansies ,especially Winter Pansies. The colour range is fantastic and they just seem to go on and on.

Planted at this time in the Autumn, their sunny little faces will shine and delight all through the dark days of winter ,through to the late spring. Even better still is that they look  great  when planted en mass in tubs a and containers, especially when placed by the front door , to welcome visitors.

Another plant similar to pansies are the violas. They have smaller flowers than the pansies  but many more of them. They also stand the heat better in the summer.

When planting in containers use a  compost such as Durstans ,with John Innes added, Multipurpose compost on its own is a bit light. Once the plants are growing well, water with a liquid feed such as Phosphogen ever few weeks and pick off the old flowers and you will be rewarded with a colourful winter  display.

To make it even more interesting, why not plant tulips bulbs amongst the pansies. Best to get the short stemmed ones as these will flower just above the pansies and not look leggy.Pansies 001 Pansies 002 Pansies 003 Pansies 004
