Hardy Banana

August 29th, 2014

To create that tropical look and really impress your gardening friends  find a sheltered sunny spot in the garden and grow a hardy Japanese banana (Musa basjoo) They will in the right conditions grow to approx. 12ft and will produce bunches of small bananas, which unfortunately are not edible. The time to plant them is in the spring with plenty of organic compost . Keeping them well watered and fed through the summer will encourage them to grow fast and produce those enormous leaves.

Come October they will need to be protected by a good layer of mulch over their roots ,the leaves cut off to the stem and then  the stem and growing tip ,insulated with bubble wrap or similar. This is removed at the end of April when they should really make some strong impressive growth.

At Avery`s Garden Centre we will have for sale large banana plants in pots ,ready to give your garden that tropical look. Shown in the picture is Candy pointing out the young bananas and its flower ,which we have been
