Grow your own,Runner Beans

May 18th, 2015

Runner beans are a really productive plant for the veg garden, producing masses of runner beans, with the added benefit of flowers that would not look out of place in a flower border.

Runner beans are a hungry plant due to their rapid growth ,so the soil where they are to grow needs plenty of compost incorporated into the soil. This will  provided  the nutrients for growth and and prevent the soil drying out.If the plants are too dry when in flower ,they will not set,so no beans.Water in the evenings  to prevent this if it becomes a problem.

If space is a problem ,a wigwam can be made,on which to grow the beans up. As demonstrated by Jasper (one he made earlier)

At Averys Garden Centre we grow and sell Runner bean plants in punnets of ten. This way there is no root disturbance when planting into the soil One of the  varieties we sell is called White Lady.It came top  for taste in the Which Magazines taste test.
